Abstract

Introduction: Alcohol consumption among college students is complex and multifactorial, with each factor potentially behaving as either a risk or protective factor; both of which can in turn influence decision-making regarding one's own behavior. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship and effect of resistance self-efficacy and self-control on alcohol consumption among college students. Methods: A descriptive, correlational, and predictive study was conducted, involving 228 college students. Participants were selected using a stratified random probability sampling with proportional allocation to stratum size, who were administered a Personal Data Form, the Situational Confidence Questionnaire, the Abbreviated Self-Control Scale, and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test. The study adhered to the Regulations of the General Health Law. Results: 57.0% of participants were female and 43.0% were male. 82.0% of young adults consumed alcohol in the past year, 46.1% in the past month, and 24.1% in the past week. 42.8% exhibited sensible drinking behavior, 28.3% were dependent, and 28.9% were harmful drinkers. It was identified that resistance self-efficacy (rs= -.510, p<.01) and self-control (rs= -.187, p<.05) have a negative and significant relationship with alcohol consumption. Furthermore, resistance self-efficacy (β= -.381, p=.001) showed a negative and significant effect on alcohol consumption. Conclusions: The results of this study can significantly contribute to the understanding of the phenomenon of alcohol consumption, knowledge that can serve as the basis for future research or interventions aimed at preventing alcohol consumption among college students.
